Charity of the year

Our Charity of the Year for 2012 is Tunbridge Wells Crisis Recovery (TWCR). TWCR is a local Christian charity, staffed by trained volunteers, providing a day centre for the homeless and supporting people with addiction issues.

For the past eight years, TWCR has run its centre in Tunbridge Wells from the United Reformed Church. The centre is available to everyone and open Monday mornings during the ‘winter’ half of the year when the weather is at its most inclement. Recovery courses are available throughout the year.

We have acted as TWCR’s independent auditor for a number of years now and are familiar with the important work the charity does in both Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge.

When we visited TWCR we were very impressed with what we saw. We were particularly struck by the practical help that the charity provides, offering warm clothes, hot drinks and a shower as well as much needed support and advice. The team is sometimes able to help people find accommodation and work through referral to other agencies.

The 10-Steps Recovery Programme is a Christian programme designed to help people through their addictions by reconciliation with God, reconciliation with themselves and, finally, reconciliation with others.

The charity is only small and although it doesn’t deal with a lot of people, it makes a big difference to those who are helped and encouraged to move forward in their lives.
